Westchester Mixed Martial Arts (MMA Level I)

Westchester Mixed Martial Arts is a comprehensive integrated martial arts style.  Combining elements of Muay Thai, Karate, Tae Kwon Do and Krav Maga, students learn a well rounded system that is highly effective for fitness, self defense and creates a solid foundation for those who want to take the next step of learning the sport of  mixed martial arts.

While many styles are based on the concept of increasingly complex movements and long sequence memorization, WMMA emphasizes building the skills and abilities of the martial artist, so that responses to attacks become instinctual.

What Is Krav Maga?

Krav Maga is the official hand to hand combat system of the Israeli-Defense Forces. It’s also the preferred system of the U.S. Military and law enforcement personnel. Krav Maga is not a traditional martial art. No katas. No rituals.

Based on simple principles and instinctive movements, this reality-based system is designed to teach real self defense in the shortest possible time.  Learn to defend against common chokes, grabs, and bear hugs, as well as weapons such as guns, knives, and sticks.  Just as important it teaches people to function during the stress of a sudden, violent encounter.

Tested on the battlefield and on the streets, Krav Maga’s practical approach to self defense will make you safer and more secure.

A simple, effective self defense system that emphasizes instinctive movements, practical techniques, and realistic training scenarios.

What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai  is a hard martial art from Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. It is similar to other Indochinese styles of kickboxing, namely pradal serey from Campuchiia, tomoi from Malaysia, lethwei from Myanmar and Muay Lao from Laos. Descended from muay boran, Muay Thai is Thailand's national sport.

The word muay derives from the Sanskrit mavya and Thai comes from the word Tai. Muay Thai is referred to as the "Art of Eight Limbs" or the "Science Of Eight Limbs" because it makes use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes, thus using eight "points of contact", as opposed to "two points" (fists) in Western boxing and "four points" (hands and feet) used in sport-oriented martial arts. A practitioner of Muay Thai is known as a nak muay. Western practitioners are sometimes called nak muay farang meaning foreign boxer.

What is Karate?

Karate is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Islands in what is now Okinawa, Japan. It was developed from indigenous fighting methods called te and Chinese kenpō. Karate is a striking art using punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes, and open-handed techniques such as knife-hands (karate chop). Grappling, locks, restraints, throws, and vital point strikes are taught in some styles. A karate practitioner is called a karateka

Karate was developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom prior to its 19th century annexation by Japan. It was brought to the Japanese mainland in the early 20th century during a time of cultural exchanges between the Japanese and the Ryukyuans. In 1922 the Japanese Ministry of Education invited Gichin Funakoshi to Tokyo to give a karate demonstration. In 1924 Keio University established the first university karate club in Japan and by 1932, major Japanese universities had karate clubs. After the Second World War, Okinawa became an important United States military site and karate became popular among servicemen stationed there.

What is Tae Kwon Do

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and the national sport of South Korea. In Korean, tae  means "to strike or break with foot"; kwon  means "to strike or break with fist"; and do means "way," "method," or "art." Thus, taekwondo may be loosely translated as "the art of the foot and fist" or "the art of kicking and punching."

As many other arts, it combines combat techniques, self-defense, sport, exercise, meditation, and philosophy. In 1989, Taekwondo was claimed as the world's most popular martial art in terms of number of practitioners.] Gyeorugi, a type of sparring, has been an Olympic event since 2000.
